Vietnamese researchers to test vaccines on themselves

Thanh Nien, a good Vietnamese source, says researchers will test vaccines on themselves.

According to the Hanoi-based Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, Vietnam will produce H5N1 vaccines by culturing the bird flu strain for lengthy periods in monkey cells, yielding a deactivated form of the virus. When the deactivated form is delivered to the human system, it should kick start the immune system, allowing it to recognize and fend off the real virus.

The Vietnam-produced vaccine samples are now in the hands of the World Health Organization for analysis prior to the human test.
